THE DESIGN PROCESS

Evolution of a Garden Design

After the initial consultation, I will usually start the design process by drawing a plan of what the garden currently looks like, marking which features are to be kept and which can be moved/removed.

I will then produce at least two possible designs based on the customers wants and needs. Some people have a strong idea of what they want but aren't sure how to implement this practically. Other people have only a general idea about what they want (e.g. low maintenance, dog friendly etc.). And both of these (or anywhere in between) are absolutely fine!

Multiple designs for the same garden based on the customers' requirements.

After producing initial designs and discussing these with the customer, I will work on a more detailed design based on the plan the customer likes most.

Sometimes designs can change drastically from the first draft, this could be due to things like price of materials, potential planning permissions needed, practical considerations (accessibility, proximity to a supply of electricity, water etc.). For example, in the design above, the customer originally wanted a shed at the bottom of the garden however, in this particular case, planning permission would have been required so, it was dropped from the design.

Final design

The final design.

If you aren't sure you can achieve the look you want due to particular constraints, don't think of these as problems but as opportunities for innovative design! There are almost always ways of working around obstacles.
